Leadership

Bruce Hellman

CEO & Co-Founder

Bruce is uMotif's entrepreneurial leader and co-founded the company in 2012. He and his team have designed and built the uMotif patient-centric data capture platform powering site-based to fully decentralised clinical, real-world, and post-marketing research.

Bruce began his career working in clinical trials at British Biotech before joining the UK Civil Service Fast Stream in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Prior to founding uMotif, Bruce was a Management Consultant at Serco and holds an Executive MBA from Imperial College Business School.

Bruce was recognised in the 2019 PharmaVOICE 100 as one of the most innovative entrepreneurs in life sciences and has also been nominated as one of Computer Weekly's UKtech50 Rising Stars, won the Cisco BIG awards, and was nominated by Real Business magazine as one of the '30 to watch in mobile'.

Bruce is a multiple Ironman finisher and coaches the Teddington Rugby Club Under 8s.

Ben James

Chief Product Officer & Co-Founder

Ben leads the product team and is responsible for the uMotif technology roadmap with the focus of bringing consumer grade technology to the life sciences industry. He co-founded uMotif in 2012 and is the mastermind behind the highly engaging Motif user interface.

Ben has over 20 years' experience in interaction and product design. Prior to co-founding uMotif, Ben managed an interaction design consultancy, Highrise Design, working with top UK and US design agencies. Ben's experience in building large scale configurable consumer products brings a fresh perspective to designing uMotif's patient-centric eClinical platform.

Ben spends his free time with his two boys playing music and swimming in very cold water!

Jonathan Moshinsky

Chief Strategy Officer

Jonathan is responsible for strategy at uMotif. He has over 10 years' experience in software strategy and management consulting for life sciences companies. Prior to uMotif, Jonathan was part of Veeva System's commercial strategy team. Before that, he held senior consulting roles at IBM and was a senior medical writer at Medaxial (now part of Covance).

Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Leeds.

Jonathan is also the founder of the critically acclaimed uMotif Pet Cornerâ„¢.

Prakash Shah

Chief Financial Officer

Prakash is responsible for financial operations and investor relations at uMotif. He is a qualified ACA/CFA trained management executive with 20 years' experience delivering financial and business leadership to blue-chip and growth companies including Deloitte, JPMorgan, Nomura, UBS, and tech start-ups.

Prakash has worked in the city as a portfolio and hedge fund manager, trader, and analyst. For the past 10 years he has led start-up teams through rapid growth and scale-ups.

Prakash spends his spare time with family, though is resigned to being a taxi and ATM for his teenage son. Playing and coaching both football and rugby keep him active as well as being a keen cyclist.

Simon Brooks

Chief Delivery Officer

Simon leads the uMotif professional services team and is responsible for ensuring customer success. Simon brings over 30 years' experience working in life sciences technology from developing through to implementing SaaS solutions across the full spectrum of pharmaceutical R&D activities.

Simon led enterprise deployments of Pharmacovigilance, CDMS, CTMS, and EDC systems at GSK and Novartis. He then moved into commercial software development working with PhaseForward and Oracle Health Sciences on strategy and implementing clinical data management and data warehousing solutions. Prior to joining uMotif, Simon led the global services team at Commonwealth Informatics Inc, based in Boston. MA.

Simon holds a Bachelor of Science, with Honours, in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Leeds.

Simon is a keen cyclist - mainly enjoying short cycles to the pub to spend time with family.

Louise White

Head of People & Culture

As head of uMotif's people and culture Louise is responsible for developing and embedding employee initiatives and policies. She ensures that the uMotif culture is aligned with our company vision and strategic goals. Louise is passionate about ensuring uMotif is a top place to work and ensures successful recruitment, onboarding, and development for all employees.

Louise's expertise lies in helping companies scale. Prior to uMotif Louise was human resources manager at Huddle where she joined as the fifth employee and went on to support their fast growth with opening offices in New York and San Francisco.

Louise holds a Bachelor of Arts, with Honours, in Film and Television Studies from Brunel University and a CIPD advanced certificate in HR Management Level 7.

Louise spends her spare time with her family and Robin – a rather pampered bunny rabbit. She is the driving force behind uMotifers getting fit with Joe Wicks during lockdown.

Jonathan Stone

Head of Global Business Development

With a decade of experience selling eClinical solutions in the life sciences space Jonathan leads the uMotif global market and business development teams. Prior to uMotif Jonathan spent 5 years at Medidata Solutions and was pivotal to their expansion in EMEA where he helped the company grow significantly across Europe and Israel. Previously Jonathan was responsible for business development of clinical trial supplies at Durbin.

Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Science, with Honours, in Biotechnology from the University of Glasgow and a Master of Science in Strategic Project Planning from Heriot-Watt University.

Jonathan is uMotif's resident champion bagpiper! He dedicates his free time to young son, Oliver, and is a keen sportsman enjoying football, rugby, and skiing.

Rachel Lowrey

Head of Marketing

Rachel is responsible for building brand awareness, generating demand, enabling sales, and communicating the value of the uMotif platform. Rachel brings over 12 years' experience of marketing eClinical technology solutions.

Prior to uMotif, Rachel spent five years at Veeva Systems where she built and led the European R&D marketing team. Before that, Rachel spent six years at Medidata Solutions, initially located in their NYC headquarters before becoming their first marketing employee in Europe with a move to the London office.

Rachel holds a Bachelor of Arts, with Honours, in Marketing Management from Northumbria University and an international diploma in Managing the Market from the University of Cambridge.

Rachel is a keen swimmer and likes to attempt open water swimming when wetsuits are permitted and the temperature is to her liking.

Brian Collins

Quality Assurance Director

Brian is responsible for the development, improvement, and day-to-day operations of uMotif's Quality Management System. Brian is our Data Protection Officer and holds an Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) and Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Brian has 35 years' experience working in life sciences. Prior to uMotif he spent 7 years at GE Healthcare providing cross-functional project leadership for operational areas of the business including program implementations at customer sites and internal simplification projects to improve compliance and agility of the QMS. Brian spent the previous 13 years at Wyeth holding senior management positions leading a variety of quality and validation roles at their European head office and UK manufacturing site.

Brian holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy in Pharmacy from the University of Bath and a Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Pharmaceutical Studies from the University of Brighton.

Brian is an avid beekeeper and harvests 10 to 15kg of honey in a good year!

Steve Powell

Chairman

Steve is a veteran of the clinical research space with over 20 years' experience in the industry. His extensive experience is gained through senior roles in finance, IT, business development, commercial, and manufacturing, all within the pharmaceutical industry. Steve was instrumental in establishing Phase Forward as a global leader in the provision of software as a service (SaaS) solutions prior to its sale to Oracle. He is currently Chairman of uMotif, Cisiv, Dotmatics, and MyMeds&Me.

Ali Mitchell

Non-Executive Director

A naval engineer by training, Ali started his career designing ships and boats, before embarking on his own start-up journey. Having gone through a trial by fire with the dot-com bubble crash, Ali joined dunnhumby as its first product leader. He built their SaaS business from zero to $50m in three years before leaving to found Huddle, an online file-sharing and collaboration company.

Having led dunnhumby and Huddle's international growth, built products and teams across the Atlantic, Ali knows all too well the challenges of scaling into new territories. He now works closely with uMotif, sharing his experiences and learnings of international expansion.

With first-hand experience of building B2B SaaS companies, Ali is obsessed with figuring out product-market fit and helping companies establish the right time to jump into hyper scaling mode.

In his free time, Ali enjoys sailing boats and building cars, re-connecting him to his background in naval architecture and engineering.

Alison Vincent

Technology Advisor

Alison is an experienced IT industry leader with recent roles including Group Chief Information Security Officer at HSBC and Chief Technology Officer at Cisco. Prior to those positions she held technical leadership roles in NDS, Micro Focus, and IBM. She has experience in cybersecurity, research and development, strategy execution, product management, and business development, with particular expertise in digital strategy, innovation, and mergers and acquisitions.

Alison has a PhD in Cryptography and Combinatorics from London University and a 1st Class Honours BSc in Maths and Computer Science. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, and a Fellow of the Institution of Technology and Engineering.

Andrew Elder

Non-Executive Director

Andrew initially practised as a neurosurgeon for six years before joining Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as a consultant. Whilst at BCG he specialised in healthcare strategy, gaining experience with large global clients across the full spectrum of healthcare including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, service and care providers, software, and telecommunications. Andrew now focuses on medical technologies, digital health, and technology-enabled services to the life sciences industry and serves on the boards of companies ranging from diagnostics, imaging, and software to pharmaceuticals and biomarkers. He joined AlbionVC in 2005 and became a partner in 2009.

Andrew has an MA plus Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Cambridge University and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England).
